# Link Microsoft Account at microsoft365.com/setup (Guide)

> Learn how to sign in or create a Microsoft account during Microsoft 365 setup, choose the right account, and verify which account holds your subscription.

When you visit microsoft365.com/setup to redeem a product key or activate a subscription, you must link it to a Microsoft account. Choosing the correct account matters, because the subscription becomes tied to that account and is used to install apps across your devices. This guide explains how to sign in, when to create a new account, and how to check which account currently holds your license.

## Why You Need a Microsoft Account

A Microsoft account is the key that unlocks your Microsoft 365 subscription. When you activate your product at microsoft365.com/setup, the license is attached to the account you use during redemption. After that, signing in with the same account on any device lets you download, install, and activate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other apps.

If you already use Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox, or Windows with a Microsoft account, you can use that same email and password. If you do not have one, you will create it during setup.

## Choosing the Right Account

Before you type your product key, decide which account should own the subscription.

* **Personal use:** Use the Microsoft account you already use for OneDrive, Outlook.com, or your Windows PC. This keeps your files, settings, and subscription in one place.
* **Family plans:** The person who will manage the subscription should sign in. They can later share licenses with family members from their account dashboard.
* **Work or school:** If your employer or school already provides Microsoft 365, do not redeem a personal product key on your work account. Personal subscriptions belong on a personal Microsoft account, and work subscriptions are managed separately by your organization.

If you are unsure, it is safer to create a new Microsoft account with a personal email address you control. You can always change account details later.

## How to Check Which Account Holds Your Subscription

If you already redeemed a product key but cannot remember which account you used, you can find it by looking at your purchased services.

1. Go to [account.microsoft.com/services](https://account.microsoft.com/services) and sign in with the Microsoft account you think you used.
2. Look under **Services & subscriptions** for an active Microsoft 365 entry.
3. If you do not see it, sign out and try another Microsoft account. Repeat until you find the subscription tied to your product key.
4. Once located, note that email address and use it on all devices where you want to install apps.

<Warning>
  If you redeemed the key on the wrong account, Microsoft Support may be able to help transfer it in some cases, but transfers are not guaranteed. It is best to double-check the account before you activate.
</Warning>

## What Happens After You Link Your Account

Once your subscription is linked to a Microsoft account, you can:

* Install apps on up to five PCs or Macs, five tablets, and five phones
* Access your subscription from any browser by signing in at office.com
* Manage sharing for family plans from your Microsoft account dashboard
* Download apps again after a device reset by signing back in with the same account

The account becomes the single source of truth for your license. As long as you remember the email and password, you can always recover access to your apps and files.
