Why You Need a Microsoft Account
A Microsoft account is the key that unlocks your Microsoft 365 subscription. When you activate your product at microsoft365.com/setup, the license is attached to the account you use during redemption. After that, signing in with the same account on any device lets you download, install, and activate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other apps. If you already use Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox, or Windows with a Microsoft account, you can use that same email and password. If you do not have one, you will create it during setup.Choosing the Right Account
Before you type your product key, decide which account should own the subscription.- Personal use: Use the Microsoft account you already use for OneDrive, Outlook.com, or your Windows PC. This keeps your files, settings, and subscription in one place.
- Family plans: The person who will manage the subscription should sign in. They can later share licenses with family members from their account dashboard.
- Work or school: If your employer or school already provides Microsoft 365, do not redeem a personal product key on your work account. Personal subscriptions belong on a personal Microsoft account, and work subscriptions are managed separately by your organization.
